About
Whisky
Whisky is an English word deriving from usky, and abbreviation of
usquebaugh the Gaelic word for “water of life”. Why “water
of life”? Perhaps because distillates were first deemed medicines,
a judgment that persists among many.
Whisky is a grain distillate, almost always including a proportion
of barley malt. It retains some taste from the water and grains that
were its original raw materials: peat used to dry the malt, the casks
in which it was matured and from the surroundings in which they slept.
Nowhere is this more evident than in Scotland, which has far more
whisky distilleries than any other nation in such a diversity of locations.
Each distillery produces a spirit with flavors which are shaped by
the landscape. While blended scotches combine the flavors of Lowland
and Highland, river and coast, the single malts each represent their
own
mountains, glen or cove.
